The Dyspraxic Guide: Man-Grooming

Been asked for my thoughts regarding the art of man-grooming.

Now ...

Shaving

At Police College, it was a requirement to be clean shaven. Interesting. On day one I bought some disposable razors and quickly reminded myself of why I don't normally wet shave. I was also surprised my room mate did not declare a crime scene in the bathroom and start sticking up blue and white tape all over the place.

A good electric razor does the trick. The better ones cost more however I find a shaver and trimmer combined does wonders. Foil shavers will give you the close shave feel.

Find that if I am wet shaving then spending a bit more on a proper razor is a must along with a gel rather than a foam. Stay away from the disposables.

Shower Gel

I have a tendency to squeeze too hard on the bottle. Have recently found "Shower Foam" more effective. Push down on a button and out comes a gel which becomes a foam. Much more economical!

Buttons

Still struggle with this. On a shirt tend to line up the top button first, do that then pull the shirt down tight before moving onto the next button - Hopefully it lines up nicely. I double check in the mirror because shirts tend to have an extra button sometimes at the bottom of the shirt. Interestingly my partner notices I stick out my tongue when trying this with a severe look of concentration.

Ironing

Now - Recently purchased a tumble drier. Whilst still hot, Tend to take out items and hand them up. It doesn't mean its crease free but saves on some ironing.

Found that the local Morrisons came in handy whilst I was at Police College for uniform ironing. Think I started a trend because I couldn't move with the amount of anxious probationers blocking the dry cleaning section. I later found someone who was ex Navy who was willing to iron stuff if I polished his parade shoes.

The lesson re Iorning: Tumble dry or find someone else to do it.

Laces

Tend to do my laces once and slip my feet in and out of my shoes. Can never tie my laces tight enough to be effective. Having to wear boots, I have found that I really need to concentrate with the laces as they tend to be longer risking coming loose and me going flying. Lucky thee are a good range or lace free shoes and trainers now. Tend to wear sketchers because I have flat feet, need support ideally without the hassle of laces. There is a range of smart shoes and boots that are lace free from NEXT as well.
